The mainstream media, once lauded as the guardian of democracy and truth, has become a partisan institution manipulated by elites to promote ideological agendas. Its noble purpose—to inform the public and hold power accountable—has been subverted by progressive ideologues wielding tools like narrative framing, censorship, and redefinition of truth. Now, it stands as one of the most powerful engines of the woke movement, aiming not merely to inform, but to indoctrinate, shame dissent, and suppress opposing worldviews. This essay will explore how the media fell under the sway of Neo-Marxist ideologies, describe the figures and principles behind the shift, and offer a practical Christian and conservative game plan for reclaiming the battleground of public opinion.
The Role of Media in the Woke Movement
The purpose of the media in a free society should be threefold: (1) disseminate facts, (2) facilitate informed debate, and (3) serve as a check on governmental and institutional power. However, as progressivism evolved into a moralistic, secular religion based on identity politics, the media was gradually weaponized for a different purpose: to shape public perception, redefine truth, and marginalize dissent.
This transformation has been accomplished not through open debate, but through tactics tailored to the medium’s unique strengths in persuasion and visibility:
- Narrative Framing: Events are interpreted through an ideological lens before being presented. For example, a riot becomes a “mostly peaceful protest” if it serves the progressive cause.
- Strategic Omission: Facts that would damage the narrative are simply excluded—such as the race of a criminal suspect when it doesn’t fit the white supremacist storyline.
- Labeling Dissent: Christian moral teachings are rebranded as “hate speech.” Disputed medical claims, even when supported by credentialed experts, are labeled “disinformation.”
These tactics do not merely reflect bias; they are expressions of a deeply held worldview aimed at reengineering society.
Historical Timeline of Media Capture
1970s–1990s: Consolidation of Progressive Influence
The seeds of ideological takeover were sown during this era as major journalism schools—Columbia, Northwestern, and Berkeley—became dominated by progressive professors who emphasized activism over objectivity. Journalists entering the field often believed their job was to “speak truth to power” from a leftist framework.
2000s: Blurring of Lines Between Fact and Opinion
The rise of cable news—with networks like CNN and MSNBC adopting talk show-style programming—blurred distinctions between objective reporting and opinion commentary. At the same time, the internet shattered traditional gatekeeping, allowing independent voices but also spreading left-wing narratives through algorithms and clicks.
2010s–2020s: Collusion with Big Tech and Censorship
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter (pre-Musk), and YouTube partnered with mainstream outlets to censor “misinformation,” often defined as any deviation from the leftist orthodoxy. The COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 election, and transgender debate became testing grounds for media-tech-government coordination to suppress dissent.
Key Figures Behind the Movement
Walter Lippmann (1889–1974)
An early theorist of media influence, Lippmann developed the concept of the “manufacture of consent,” arguing that elites must guide public opinion because average citizens lacked the knowledge to make rational decisions. While he advocated for democracy, his elitism laid the foundation for technocratic manipulation.
Ben Rhodes
A central figure in the Obama administration, Rhodes boasted about creating an “echo chamber” in the press corps to sell the Iran Deal. He derided young journalists as ignorant but easily manipulated, confirming the suspicions that government insiders view media not as a watchdog, but as a megaphone for propaganda.
CNN, MSNBC, and the New York Times
These outlets have ceased to be news organizations in the classical sense. CNN’s infamous framing of riots as “fiery but mostly peaceful” and MSNBC’s ongoing portrayal of traditional Christians as extremists are not accidents—they reflect ideological commitments. The New York Times has gone so far as to elevate The 1619 Project, a historically discredited piece of racial revisionism, to curriculum status.
Core Concepts and Definitions
1. Agenda-Setting Theory:
Media do not tell people what to think, but what to think about. This gives them power to define the terms of national conversation—focusing on George Floyd while ignoring the murder of retired police captain David Dorn, for instance.
2. Post-Truth Politics:
An environment where emotional appeals—especially to victimhood or outrage—trump factual accuracy. Under this condition, feelings become facts, and traditional logic is treated as oppressive.
3. Manufactured Consent (Noam Chomsky):
The idea that public opinion can be engineered by those who control media and messaging. Although Chomsky used it to critique capitalism, progressive elites now use this very tool to advance Neo-Marxist ideology.
Christian and Conservative Game Plan
If wokeness uses the media as a weapon, then conservatives and Christians must form a resistance that is strategic, truthful, and persistent. The goal is not simply to react, but to reclaim the narrative space with better ideas, grounded in objective truth and eternal values.
1. Build Alternative Institutions
- Support Conservative and Christian Media: Platforms like The Daily Wire, The Blaze, Epoch Times, and PragerU offer powerful counter-narratives. Support them with subscriptions, shares, and donations.
- Encourage Journalism Entrepreneurship: Young Christian and conservative writers must be encouraged to start newsletters, podcasts, and YouTube channels. Small but loyal audiences can multiply influence.
2. Expose the Manipulation
- Media Literacy for Christians: Churches and homeschool networks should teach how to spot biased framing, statistical manipulation, and omission of context.
- Debunk with Facts, Not Fury: Conservatives must maintain moral high ground. Rage plays into the left’s “dangerous extremist” narrative. Respond with calm, factual rebuttals rooted in Scripture and history.
3. Use Scripture to Define Reality
- Truth exists (John 17:17); man is sinful (Romans 3:23); feelings are not ultimate (Jeremiah 17:9); and justice must be impartial (Proverbs 18:13, Micah 6:8). These principles directly contradict the relativistic, identity-centric worldview of the woke media.
4. Pressure Legacy Media
- Defund and Discredit: Do not give your attention or dollars to CNN, NYT, or NPR. Encourage advertisers to withdraw support. Share documentation of their falsehoods.
- Investigative Exposure: Use platforms like Project Veritas (now Veritas Action) or the Media Research Center to spotlight internal corruption and hypocrisy.
5. Equip the Next Generation
- Teach children and teens to love truth more than popularity. Elevate heroes like Solzhenitsyn, Wilberforce, and Christ Himself—figures who stood against cultural lies. Provide them with books, debates, and apologetics tools to resist soft tyranny.
Conclusion: A Battle for Truth
The media was once tasked with informing a free people. Now, it trains them to think like slaves to a narrative. Wokeness is not merely an opinion—it is a controlling worldview bent on societal transformation. It captures language, emotion, and visibility to reengineer moral norms. But the truth is not lost. Christians know the truth is a Person (John 14:6), and conservatives grounded in natural law and reason still possess the intellectual firepower to prevail. By building parallel institutions, cultivating discernment, and reclaiming the biblical definition of truth and justice, we can expose the darkness and bring clarity to a generation lost in the fog of ideological manipulation.
