The U.S. military has long stood as a symbol of national unity, meritocracy, and upward mobility. For generations, it has offered young men from impoverished backgrounds—regardless of race—a clear path to economic stability and personal growth. Enlistees benefit not only from steady pay, comprehensive healthcare, and educational opportunities through the GI Bill, but also from a disciplined environment that fosters character, leadership, and resilience. Service in the military has helped transform boys into men, forging bonds of brotherhood that transcend race, class, and region. However, these strengths are now threatened by a creeping ideological transformation that has infiltrated the armed forces under the guise of social justice and inclusion.
Ideological Subversion: The Rise of Neo-Marxism in the Armed Forces
In recent decades, and especially under the Obama and Biden administrations, the military has become a new front in the ideological battle being waged by proponents of Neo-Marxism. Originally conceived by thinkers like Antonio Gramsci and Herbert Marcuse, Neo-Marxism aims to deconstruct Western institutions by identifying and dismantling traditional power structures. Its ideological offspring—Critical Race Theory (CRT), radical gender theory, and diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI) orthodoxy—have penetrated deeply into the Pentagon and its subordinate institutions.
Obama and Biden Administrations: From Integration to Indoctrination
The transformation accelerated in the 2010s. The repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” opened the door for open LGBT service. Soon thereafter, women were integrated into combat roles, and the Obama-era Pentagon moved to permit transgender individuals to serve openly. These changes were presented as progressive, but they often lacked sufficient analysis regarding long-term effects on morale, cohesion, and combat effectiveness.
Under the Biden administration, the Department of Defense launched a full-scale ideological campaign. Mandatory DEI training, CRT-based instruction at West Point, and the infamous 2021 military-wide “stand-down” to root out “extremism” all served to turn the military inward, viewing its own soldiers as threats. Leaders like Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley openly embraced the language of leftist ideology, invoking “white rage” and systemic racism as the military’s new enemies.
Cultural Engineering and Recruitment Crisis
Recruitment advertising became increasingly politicized. Traditional appeals to strength and duty were replaced with emotionally charged identity narratives. One infamous ad featured a female soldier raised by two mothers, focusing more on her social upbringing than her combat capabilities.
Meanwhile, enlistment numbers plummeted. In 2022 and 2023, the Army missed its recruitment goals by over 15,000 each year—about 25% short. The Navy and Air Force also missed their goals by several thousand. In contrast, under the Trump administration, recruitment surged. In 2024, the Army met its target, and by early 2025, it surpassed expectations, signaling a decisive turnaround.
Medical and Psychological Hazards of Gender Ideology
Perhaps the most medically and operationally dangerous shift has been the military’s embrace of transgender ideology. Hormone therapies (estrogen or testosterone) increase risks of blood clots, cardiovascular events, and bone density issues. Transition surgeries can render service members non-deployable for up to a year.
Mental health concerns compound the problem. Transgender individuals suffer disproportionately high rates of psychological distress, suicidal ideation, and depression. RAND studies have confirmed these elevated risks. While compassion is necessary, combat readiness and unit stability must take precedence. Trusting individuals undergoing massive hormonal and psychological shifts with battlefield responsibilities is a gamble with real-world consequences.
Demoralizing the Warrior Class: Erasing Heritage and Tradition
The ideological assault extended to military heritage. Bases named for Confederate generals—Fort Bragg, Fort Hood—were renamed. Statues and memorials were removed. Ships were renamed to erase allegedly offensive historical associations.
This cultural purge was especially alienating to Southern military personnel, who make up a significant portion of the force. Many perceived these actions not as unifying, but as a repudiation of their identity and values. The erosion of shared tradition and honor undermined the esprit de corps essential to military effectiveness.
Cracks in Unit Cohesion and Moral Authority
Mandatory CRT sessions instructed white soldiers to confess their “privilege,” fostering suspicion and resentment rather than unity. Physical fitness standards were lowered to accommodate women in combat roles, potentially endangering lives. The forced Covid-19 vaccine mandate led to the dismissal of thousands of soldiers, including devout Christians and those with legitimate medical concerns. Morale suffered deeply as trust between the rank-and-file and leadership evaporated.
International Implications and Adversary Strength
Across the Atlantic, allied militaries mirrored America’s descent into ideological distraction. Britain’s forces lowered physical standards. Canada aggressively implemented transgender policies. Germany introduced gender-neutral training and accommodation reforms.
In stark contrast, adversaries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea intensified their focus on lethality, readiness, and strategic capability. These regimes see the West’s ideological confusion not as progress, but as vulnerability.
Matthew Lohmeier: A Case Study in Courage and Redemption
Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier was relieved of command in 2021 after publishing Irresistible Revolution, a book warning about Marxist infiltration in the U.S. military. His removal sent a chilling message: truth-tellers would be punished. Yet under President Trump’s second term, Lohmeier has been appointed to a senior civilian position within the Department of the Air Force—an affirmation of his integrity and a signal that principled resistance is now rewarded.
The Trump and Hegseth Restoration Plan
President Trump, alongside veteran advocate Pete Hegseth, has launched a bold effort to reverse the damage. Trump’s administration has removed DEI mandates, restored focus on merit-based advancement, and reoriented recruitment toward valor, discipline, and patriotism. Hegseth’s national commentary and writings have mobilized public awareness and called for a return to a warrior ethos rooted in God, family, and country.
Conclusion: Rebuilding the Republic’s Shield
The military has long been a ladder out of poverty—a place where young men with few options could gain self-respect, earn a living, and serve their country. But this only works if the institution remains merit-based, disciplined, and united. Ideological experiments—whether in the form of CRT, DEI, or radical gender policies—undermine its purpose.
The revival underway under Trump, Lohmeier, and Hegseth points toward a future where the U.S. military can again serve both the security of the Republic and the advancement of its citizens. If we hope to deter global enemies, uplift our own people, and restore pride in the American flag, we must reclaim our armed forces from the grip of Neo-Marxist ideology and return it to the noble mission it was created to fulfill.
