covenant of redemption: In covenant theology, the eternal agreement within the Trinity in which the Father appointed the Son to redeem a chosen people, the Son willingly undertook that work, and the Holy Spirit applies its benefits. It is sometimes called the counsel of peace and is inferred from passages describing the Father giving a people and a saving mission to the Son (John 6:37–40; 17:1–6).
