Historical theology is the study of the development, formulation, and transmission of Christian doctrine throughout the history of the church. It examines how believers, theologians, councils, confessions, and controversies have understood, defended, and refined biblical truth in response to theological challenges over the centuries. Unlike biblical theology, which traces revelation through Scripture, or systematic theology, which organizes doctrine by topic, historical theology traces the church’s understanding of those doctrines across history.
