obstreperous

« Back to Glossary Index

the behavior of a person who is aggressively noisy, stubbornly defiant, quarrelsome, or disruptive—especially toward authority, instruction, or correction.

An obstreperous individual does not merely ask difficult questions or express disagreement; he resists with hostility, bad faith, mockery, or continual contentiousness.

In Scripture and Christian theology, a distinction is often made between the obstreperous person and the sincere or respectful enquirer. Jesus answered humble seekers patiently and compassionately (John 3:1–21; Luke 18:18–27), but He frequently answered hostile or obstreperous opponents indirectly, sharply, or with rebuke (Matt. 21:23–27; Luke 20:1–8). Likewise, Proverbs counsels against wasting wisdom on scoffers who refuse correction (Prov. 9:7–8).

Thus, obstreperousness implies more than intellectual disagreement; it refers to a rebellious disposition resistant to truth, instruction, or legitimate authority.
